Greece-China ship lane open

A direct shipping route linking Greece with China was inaugurated Saturday in an agreement aimed at boosting commercial ties between the two nations.

The cargo ship River Elegance, owned by the shipping company Cosco, reached the port of Piraeus on Saturday with 580 containers on board from China.

The new route is the result of Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis’s January trip to China, where he met with top business and diplomatic officials.

Greece hopes to integrate its ports into the path of Chinese goods making their way to southeastern Europe and the Balkans.

“We are developing the strategic role of Piraeus while also boosting Greek-Chinese trade,” said Merchant Marine Ministry General Secretary Yiannis Tzoannos.
