Posidonia: Germanischer Lloyd Establishes GL Academy Hellas

Athens, 5 June, 2008 – The newly established training institution Germanischer Lloyd Academy Hellas will offer seminars and training course on maritime technical and operational topics to the Greek shipping community. Together with the inspection office GL Piraeus, GL Academy Hellas has already carried out three seminars on the topics of “Internal Auditor ISM / ISO 9001:2000 for Shipping Companies”, “Implementation and Internal Auditing of an Environmental Management System in Shipping Companies IS0 14001:2004” and “Damage to Machinery and Repair”. Further 11 topics are scheduled until the end of the year.

“GL Academy in Hamburg has developed over the last three years, a great number of comprehensive seminars tailor-made to the demands of the Greek Shipping community”, said Athanasios Reisopoulos, Area Manager Mediterranean / South Africa at Germanischer Lloyd’s Posidonia press conference today. “GL Academy Hellas will further enhance this activity with additional resources in terms of qualified tutors, facilities with more frequent number of seminars.”

In meeting the high training demand also for internal qualification, Germanischer Lloyd has nominated GL Piraeus as the training station for the region Europe / Middle East / Africa. In line with GL’s quality policy, the practical training for surveyor candidates will be provided in Piraeus.

Germanischer Lloyd’s station in Piraeus was established in 1977. The foundation of the GL subsidiary “Germanischer Lloyd Hellas Survey E.P.E.” took place in 1982. In 1987 the Piraeus office was upgraded to an Area Mediterranean office. The list of clients includes names such as Costamare, Laskaridis, Minoan Lines, Hellenic Seaways and many more.
