Two students, 11 years old, Vassilis and Maria from Athens, explained why they participate in HELMEPA Junior, "We decided to help save the environment. We love the sea and we want to keep it clean. We give leaflets out and inform our fellow students about the ways to protect the marine environment."

In April 2008, LRET agreed a three-year funding programme to help HELMEPA extend its 'HELMEPA Junior' programme to incorporate a shipping component with a science/engineering focus aimed at children in Greece up to the age of 13. In addition LRET is going to support a new scheme, 'HELMEPA Cadets', aimed at children over 13 to involve them in the marine world - particularly environmental issues - and to encourage awareness of careers in the merchant marine.

The programme fits LRET´s aim to encourage school children to become involved with science, engineering and technology. It is the first time LRET has worked with junior educational programmes outside the UK. Lloyd´s Register, which is an associate member of HELMEPA, and, more recently, LRET has provided funds to HELMEPA in the past but without any specific focus. This agreement, marked by the small ceremony yesterday, is the result of discussions with HELMEPA to support areas of priority in their work programme.

The support is worth Euro 158,000 over three years.

HELMEPA at Posidonia

Posidonia got off to a flying start with the grand opening of the exhibition on Monday evening. Stand 300A of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association, largely known as HELMEPA, received a large number of visitors who were welcomed by the newly-elected Chairman of the Board Captain Vassilis Constantacopoulos and the Director General Dimitris Mitsatsos.

HELMEPA´s staff members are looking forward to informing interested parties visiting the stand about the Association´s aims and initiatives towards preserving our planet´s precious marine environment.
