Helsinki encourages cruise ship companies to protect the Baltic Sea

This summer, cruise ships can leave their waste water at Helsinki without a separate charge. The Port of Helsinki has built sewers and receiving bays at cruise ship quays. The present aim is to achieve a considerable increase in the volume of waste water left by cruise ships. The volume of waste water left by cruise ships will be monitored and the ship or shipping company with the biggest increase in waste water pumped onto shore will be rewarded at the end of the season.

Scheduled passenger ships have already been pumping their waste water onto shore for quite some time. By law, waste water can be discharged into the sea at a distance of 12 nautical miles from the shore.
