Lloyd's Register donates more than 1.15 million yuan to help the victims of the Sichuan earthquake
May 27, 2008
The Lloyd's Register Group and staff have donated more than 1.15 million yuan so far to aid the victims of this month's devastating earthquake in Sichuan, China. Donations continue to be received.
The total of the donations as of May 23 comprised 200,435 yuan raised for the Red Cross earthquake relief fund by Lloyd's Register staff in China and Hong Kong - a sum that was matched by Lloyd's Register Asia's China operations - 55,606 yuan raised by the China staff for the families of Lloyd's Register employees whose lives were disrupted by the powerful quake and an additional 695,500 yuan (US$100,000) contributed by the Group.
The proportion of the donations destined for the families of employees affected by the quake offered immediate relief and assistance to those people who urgently need temporary accommodation, the care of their loved ones and logistical support to rebuild their homes and their lives.
In addition to the collective donation, the Group has committed to supporting a rebuilding project - ideally, involving the reconstruction of a school - the site and nature of which will be identified at a later date. Staff input in helping to identify a worthy project in the Sichuan area has been encouraged.
While the Group recognised that no amount of money would adequately compensate those who have lost loved ones, are caring for their injured, or are struggling to put their lives back together after this calamitous event, we are heartened by the robust and timely response of our employees who clearly showed their strong commitment to aiding those in need.
