At the Seatrade Awards last week, DNV was crowned ‘The Best Classification Society’, fending off competition from Lloyd’s Register and the Indian Register of Shipping. The event took place in Dubai and DNV’s victory is the third time they have won it over the past four years. DNV also picked up the prestigious award in 2005 and 2007.
‘We’re delighted to have won the award again. It reflects the strong standing DNV has in the region and our dedication to attending customer needs,’ says Eivind Grostad, DNV Maritime’s regional manager for the Middle East and India. ‘This recognition gives our customers the added confidence in working with us and further strengthens our leading position in the industry.’
Criteria for the award included contribution to the development of the maritime sector across the region. Commitment to safety and quality, and social and environmental responsibility were also recognized. Technical innovation was also highlighted as was business enterprise and achievement.
A double process ensures fair winners – popular voting first by the readership of the magazine, then a panel of independent judges sifts through the three finalists in each category.
‘The Seatrade Awards are considered by many as an opportunity to recognize the leaders of the Asia maritime industry, whose innovation and dedication to quality have helped to transform Asia in to the world’s leading maritime nation,’ points out Grostad. He attributes the award ‘to the dedicated efforts of all the maritime employees in the region…without them it would not be possible.’
Today DNV is the largest classification society in the Middle East and India in terms of gross tonnage operated by owners in the region and more than 8 mill dwt on order by local owners to DNV class. It has 17 maritime offices in the region with close to 200 employees in the Middle East and India together.
