Petrobras engineers receive award from the King of Spain

30/6/2008

Petrobras was the grand winner of The Young Author award, granted by the World Petroleum Congress to the best study carried out by young professionals (aged up to 35). Production engineers Jaime Naveiro, Fernando Mendes, and Pedro Medina received the award from the king of Spain, Juan Carlos I, in a ceremony held today (06/30), in Madrid, Spain.

The study analyzes the natural gas supply and demand balance perspectives in the Southern Cone, calculating the trade advantages the main countries will have. Different scenarios were prepared to assess the impact the new projects foreseen for the region will have on country relationships and how they might impact future negotiations.

"Recognition in an international event of this size is very rewarding, particularly to us, who are in our early careers. The award, in addition to being the fruit of our work, is the outcome of the investments the Company makes in training and qualifying its employees,” said Jaime Naveiro, from the international area’s New Business Management.

Investment in human resources

Petrobras invests continuously in qualifying its professionals. Petrobras University and the Research & Development Center (Cenpes) are the two pillars of the structure the Company assembled to qualify, train, develop, and improve its workforce in tune with the search for technological innovations and solutions to face the oil industry’s challenges.

In 2007, the Company was granted the Corporate University Best in Class award, in the United States, which acknowledges the world’s best corporate universities. Petrobras was ranked the top finalist in the “Best Assessment Technique” category and was crowned with the event’s trophy as the Best Corporate University.

Petrobras University totaled more 62,000 employee participations in courses, seminars, and congresses in 2007. For 2008, it intends to consolidate the Technical School for corporate qualification of medium level professionals, and to make the Petrobras University Online available to provide educational solutions in all regions where the Company performs.

In 2006 and 2007, Petrobras was also a finalist in the Petroleum Economist Awards, an event held annually in London, in the "Best Youth Educational Program in the Energy Industry" category.
