Demonstration Plant of Beam-Down Type Solar Concentration System Ordered
Inexhaustible Supply of Clean Energy
November 17, 2008
Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES with President Mr. Yasuhiko Katoh) has recently received an order of Demonstration Plant of Beam-Down Type Solar Concentration System from Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd. (COSMO with President, Representative Director Mr. Yaichi Kimura) and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (MASDAR), a governmental organization of United Arab Emirates.
This demonstration project is to implement the joint research contract for development of Beam-Down Type Concentrated Solar Power System entered jointly by COSMO and MASDAR with Tokyo Institute of Technology. The solar heat collector generation plant of 100 kwth (in terms of thermal energy) will be constructed this year in the MASDAR CITY, a special free trade zone adjacent to Abu Dhabi Airport to collect data and study various issues for construction of commercial plant in the future.
The Beam-Down Type Concentrated Solar Power System which has been researched and developed by Professor Yutaka Tamaura of Carbon Circulate Energy Research Center, Tokyo Institute of Technology. In this system, for generation of electricity, sun light onto reflection mirrors laid out all over the compound is collected by the central reflection mirror installed at the top of the tower and is re-reflected to the solar furnace on the ground in order to make a high temperature liquid.
Currently, solar heat collector generation system is drawing attention in the sun belt of the world including oil-producing countries in the Middle East. Meanwhile, this demonstration plant aims the electricity generation with lower cost than conventional commercial Concentrated Solar Power System or photovoltaic generation system in use.
For being awarded the order of this project, MES was highly appreciated for its experience in solar collector system which helps solve the insolation problems caused by urbanization and high-rise buildings.
MES is and will aggressively promote various kinds of new energy projects to replace fossil fuel including the biggest biomass generation plant in Japan by wood chips out of waste wood material and bio-ethanol production demonstration project out of high-yield rice and rice straw.
