Maximum Weight Limit for Containers on Union Pacific Railroad

7 May 2010

On April 1, 2010, Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) revised and made a clarification on the Master Intermodal Transport Agreement (MITA) to item 310-C and item 510-B regarding the maximum weight of container. UPRR's policy on weight limitations of containers has been consistent with AAR specifications but was not specified in MITA.

Details on maximum weights and weight distribution now include:

A. Trailer (TOFC): The load weight MUST NOT exceed the limit stated on the manufacturer’s plate. Combined weight of the trailer and lading may not exceed 65,000 lbs.*

B. Container (COFC): Combined weight of container and lading may not exceed the weight specified in the table for the length of container being loaded;

C. Lading weight in trailers/containers must be evenly distributed both crosswise and lengthwise and the combined weight of lading and trailer/container must conform to all federal, state, provincial and local regulations and transportation service requirements used at the origin and final destination.

*Maximum weights are defined in current AAR specifications M931-99 for trailers (effective 5/1/99), and subject to revisions thereto.

**Maximum weights are defined in current AAR specifications M930-98 for containers (effective 11/1/98), and subject to revisions thereto.

We would like to remind you of the need to comply with these weight restrictions for shipments that require the services of UPRR to avoid delays and penalties for non compliance.

Please feel free to contact your local APL Sales or Customer Service representative should you have questions or require further information on this matter.
