APM Terminals Rotterdam introduces smart shuttle service
to avoid traffic jams

Daily barge service helps shippers and truckers avoid delays

Press Release 4 July 2011

Rotterdam, Netherlands - APM Terminals Rotterdam, in partnership with Delta Marine Terminal, is now offering extended gate access for Rotterdam cargoes from the Dutch interior and elsewhere in the European hinterland at Moerdijk Harbor. This will enable truckers to avoid traffic delays caused by ongoing construction-related congestion on the central A15 highway artery serving the Rotterdam port area.

Between 2011 and 2015 extensive roadwork is scheduled for the highway which links Maasvlakte with interior European commercial, industrial and population centers, creating significant difficulties and delays for A15 for truck traffic. APM Terminals’ customers are now able to deliver their Rotterdam cargoes at the extended gate in Moerdijk where a depot is located. A shuttle service will be operated between the extended gate and the APM Terminals Rotterdam facility by barge, avoiding road transportation altogether. “We are pleased to offer this new service to our customers to help avoid unnecessary delays, and to also promote environmentally sound alternatives to road transportation” said APM Terminals Rotterdam Operations Director, Rob Sponselee.

The container transshipment service will receive preferential treatment at both terminals, including priority scheduling, and transport rates and storage costs can be potentially reduced as storage costs in Moerdijk are lower than they are at Maasvlakte. It will also be possible to deliver containers to the depot more than eight days ahead of cut-off times.

Delta Marine Terminal (DMT) is an ISO 9001 and ISPS certified multi-purpose terminal operating in Moerdijk harbor, which is 45 km (28 miles) by road from Rotterdam. DMT is primarily focused on container and bulk transshipment, maintaining daily barge services to Rotterdam and Antwerp terminals four hours transit from Moerdijk. The terminal occupies an area of 19 hectares (47 acres), with a 600 meter wharf and over 50,000 square meters (12.3 acres) of covered storage space. Current annual capacity is 400,000 TEUs. Inland water transportation will be provided by Moerdijk-based Barge Line.

APM Terminals Rotterdam is one of the largest container terminals in Europe and is a major transshipment center for the British, Irish, Scandinavian and Baltic Markets. The current modal split at the Rotterdam terminal is 40% barge, 40% truck and 20% rail. Throughput at the Rotterdam Terminal was 2.41 million TEUs in 2010.
