Port of Brisbane – Flood Update 16 Jan 2PM

Opening of port to shipping

The Port of Brisbane will progressively re-open for shipping in the Fisherman Island precinct from tomorrow, Monday 17 January. Other reaches of the river and port will be gradually re-opened as the channel and berth pockets are surveyed and cleared. Upriver areas are showing signs of many debris obstructions and siltation; however, we are confident that shipping could be allowed in these areas from Tuesday 18 January.

Ship movements are being prioritised for tomorrow morning, and are subject to conditions determined by the Harbour Master. He will determine the order of arrival based on safety.

Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL) hydrographic surveying teams are continuing to locate sunken debris throughout the port. The PBPL dredging fleet has been successful in removing major obstructions from the main channel and Fisherman Island precinct.

The channel depths may be temporarily reduced, and ships restricted to tidal movements in the coming weeks, as debris and silt continues to travel downstream. These restrictions are not expected to prevent entry of any vessels on our forward schedule for the coming weeks.

The Harbour Master will continue to work with us to assess the conditions.

Collection of floating debris

Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) is coordinating the collection of floating and stranded debris from the Brisbane River. Collection points are in place around the Hemmant and Luggage Point reaches. A large amount of debris has been captured, and is being retrieved from the river and port areas.

PBPL teams will continue to assist with this effort to ensure the port remains functional. We ask that members of the public approach MSQ and the police to enquire about missing items.

The next update is due tomorrow Monday 17 January.
