CMA CGM ROSSINI

Monday, January 06, 2014

CMA CGM ROSSINI, a 5,770 TEU container vessel flying the French flag, lost 14 containers overboard off Ushant in very heavy seas on the night of the 3rd January 2014.

The ship, owned by CMA CGM, was sailing from Le Havre to Port Said in Egypt.

The French maritime authorities were immediately informed and the Crisis Group was activated.

CMA CGM remains in regular contact with the Atlantic Maritime Prefecture to handle this incident. A surveillance flight of the area was conducted Saturday afternoon to identify containers that have not sunk and the Maritime Prefecture of the Atlantic issued an urgent notice to mariners.

No dangerous goods were being transported in the containers lost overboard. There are no injuries to crew and no pollution has been reported.

A detailed inspection has revealed some damage to a further dozen containers on board and cargo lashings have been reinforced where necessary. The vessel has now resumed its journey to the Mediterranean.

Updated on January 6th:

CMA CGM ROSSINI passed Gibraltar on January 6th and will make an ad-hoc call in Malta to unload damaged containers and to undergo full inspection of both vessel and cargo.

Containers which were overboard could not be spotted by relevant authorities and have most probably sank. None of them contained hasardous cargo.

Following Malta call and any repairs, if required, CMA CGM ROSSINI will resume her voyage Eastbound via Suez Canal. Our operation department is reviewing the vessel schedule and will take all necessary measures to bring her back into schedule. Shippers with cargo on board will be kept informed.
