Dealing with the Rain

Date: 2009-5-6

This year, early spring in Shanghai brought continuous rain, which has not been the norm for decades. The continuous 20 days of rain caused severe disruption to the shipyard coating work. During this period four vessels needed to be docked to complete coating and painting work.

The dock repair workshop put up a weather forecast bulletin board in the workshop to assist the work teams and the superintendents in arranging production according to the weather.

During construction, the workshop continuously monitored the air humidity and communicated with the ship owners and paint suppliers' representatives to achieve an on-time schedule. A weather-tailored painting strategy was adopted: resting and preparing when it's raining heavily; blasting when it¡¯s drizzling; drying when the rain stops and painting when it is cloudy.

During the period when the OCEAN ARROW, EASTERN SEA, BODAR, Zhonghua 7 were being repaired, the dock repair workshop made effective use of every bit of time to achieve the seemingly impossible, i.e. to complete the paint work in such bad weather. The painting team managed to ensure their work was visibly progressed every day and is proud of their seemingly straightforward work; the beautifcation of the vessel.
