Safe Repair of TEMRYUK

Date: 2009-5-6

It took only 17 days for COSCO Guangdong Shipyard to complete the repair of the products tanker TEMRYUK whilst also managing to improve their safety and efficiency.

The "Safety First" principle is always the priority for COSCO Shipyards. For a products tanker, the tank cleaning process is vital in the safety management process. Even before the vessel arrived at the anchorage, the ship repair manager had prepared the oil cleaning schedule and oil tank ventilation plan. The ship repair manager arranged for the safety control team to inspect the tanks and pipelines whilst the vessel was still at the anchorage, thus ensuring the vessel was able to enter the shipyard immediately upon passing the oil tank cleaning inspection and resulting in the ship owner receiving an extremely efficient service.

As soon as the vessel entered the shipyard, the project team very carefully inspected the vessel and drew up detailed schedules for the lighting and ventilation of the tanks, the protection measures for safe access, and the removal and installation of piping systems.

The tanker was ready for repair on the 23rd Feb and the superintendents confirmed the repair work and the detailed HSE schedule with the owner. According to HSE requirements, all the superintendents should inspect their area of responsibility to ensure the on-site HSE requirements are well controlled and to reduce potential risks.

In the current weak market, ensuring the safety, quality and schedule of the project will not only effectively maintain the revenue stream for the owner, but also, as a risk reduction strategy, bring new opportunity for the shipyard.
