Online library established for hazardous material declarations

Oslo: DNV is hosting an online library of material declarations for ships so that new building yards can easily prepare Inventories of Hazardous Materials in compliance with IMO requirements.

The new IMO convention for the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships will require every ship under the convention to have an Inventory of Hazardous Materials onboard. Material declarations for ship’s structures and equipment will need to be compiled, possibly within the next few years, and DNV is simplifying the process by providing an online database of declarations from manufacturers.

“The maritime industry is responding to a growing number of anti-pollution initiatives as it moves towards greater sustainability and DNV is pioneering measures to help it do so,” said Tor Svensen, COO of DNV Maritime. “As a neutral third party, DNV is a critical link between manufacturers and owners and we are committed to providing the resources they need to work together most effectively.”

The database will provide voluntary online publication of material declarations and supplier’s Declarations of Conformity. These may either be verified by DNV through review of the relevant test reports or self declarations based on the manufacturer’s own statement.

The system will enable manufacturers to improve their product visibility and save time and money responding to individual requests for declarations. Yards will have a single resource for selecting equipment and efficiently preparing inventories. Easy access to material declarations will also help ship owners to maintain inventories through vessel’s operational phase.

By supporting early compliance with the IMO requirements, owners can strengthen their environmental profile and establish a means for maintaining control of the materials used on their ships with minimal effort.

Declarations can be downloaded free of charge and DNV is able to guide all parties through the IMO requirements. Other ship recycling services provided by DNV include statutory verification of inventories, preparation of inventories for existing ships as consultancy, and capability assessment of ship recycling yards.
