DNV completes verification and certification of major Indian deepwater gas development project

DNV has successfully completed the verification and certification of Reliance Industries Limited’s (RIL) fully commissioned KG-D6 deepwater gas field development project.

DNV was actively involved in the project from the concept stage through to the commissioning of the offshore facilities at Krishna Godavari basin in India. The KG-D6 block in India's Krishna Godavari basin is the first deepwater gas production discovery by RIL in the region, and the KG-D6 project was staged with a fast-track approach, which was commissioned in 2009 within a short span of 6.5 years from the gas find, vis-à-vis the world average of 9 years.

"It feels good to be a part of RIL's ambitious KG-D6 deepwater gas production project, in which DNV has supported the customer for quality, technology and integrity on this project,” says DNV’s George Mathew, project sponsor and the overall responsible for the RIL project.

“The success of the KG-D6 project is set to transform India's energy landscape and augment its gas production," says George, adding; “This will boost the oil and gas industry with more such deepwater exploration and development projects and related infrastructural development in the country. Thus, transforming a predominantly liquid/solid fuel economy to a gas fuel economy, which will have a far-reaching impact on energy efficiency, environmental green gas emissions, and substantial cost savings for the Indian market.”

DNV-RIL partnership

The RIL management team has acknowledged the services from DNV in completing the project and achieving the project milestones with utmost quality, safety, and inspite of numerous challenges posed by the fast-track nature of the project. RIL further acknowledged that DNV's participation in the work for the KG-D6 project as a partner in growth have added value to the project especially in improving the reliability, availability and risk management.

DNV services included design verification, risk assessment studies, independent analyses, reliability studies, due diligence, FPSO classification, and verification during the different stages of manufacturing, installation and commissioning.

Project execution

The certification and verification activity on the KG-D6 project was complex, requiring pooling-in of expertise from multi-disciplinary teams across DNV. The certificate was presented by Einar Tore Moe, DNV’s Director of Operations, Region Asia and Middle East to RIL at a senior level executive meeting organised by the customer.

“With DNV contributions from several places in the US, Europe, Middle East and Asia, the project has truly been a joint effort and is one of the largest projects for DNV in recent times. I am very proud of the team and of the successful completion of the project,” says Einar Tore Moe.
