MV Flinterstar sunk

06 October 2015

This morning near the Belgian coast MV Flinterstar sunk. The crew is safe and doing well. The Flinterstar is stable, there is no emergency. At this time, we are talking to salvage companies together with insurance to decide how the vessel will be salvaged.

Flinter Shared Services B.V. post on Twitter:
"We are overwhelmed by all the support from many today. After the tragic collision in the early hours of this morning, we have been overjoyed that all 11 colleagues and the Pilot were safe. The crew of MV Flinterstar had to act within minutes after the bow of the other vessel had poked a fatal hole in the sides of our vessel. We are very proud of our colleagues, as they did all the right things to ensure the safety of the whole team.

The fuel oil leaking is being contained as best as possible and the precautionary measures by the Belgian authorities to protect Het Zwin are important. MV Flinterstar has been inspected by divers this afternoon, these inspections will continue overnight during slack tide. This will provide valuable information about the extend of the damages, which is important for the salvage of the vessel.

From all of us at Flinter we would like to extend a BIG thank you to all parties involved in the rescue operations this morning. From the Belgian and Dutch Sea Rescue institutions to the tugs, fishing, Navy and other vessels that participated in the rescue operations. You brought our colleagues safely ashore. Thank you !"
