Hydrogen and raw materials for e-vehicle batteries from natural gas and biogas - Gasum and Hycamite begin cooperation on decarbonizing natural gas and biogas

25.11.2021

Energy company Gasum and Finnish company Hycamite TCD Technologies are to study the decarbonization of natural gas and biogas. Natural gas and biogas mostly consist of methane and Hycamiteís technology decomposes the methane molecules in gas into its elemental components, clean hydrogen and pure carbon with no emissions. Pure carbon can be used as a raw material in e-vehicle batteries, for example, and hydrogen can be used in clean energy production and as an industrial raw material.

Cooperation between Gasum and Hycamite aims to study the markets and applications for decarbonized natural gas and biogas in the Nordic countries. At the same time, cooperation seeks to assess the lifecycle emissions of the hydrogen produced using Hycamiteís technology and the potential to reduce them. This will use Gasumís knowledge of natural gas and biogas production and distribution chains as well as verification and calculation of their emissions.

Strong growth in need for low-carbon solutions
Many of Gasumís industrial customers need hydrogen as a raw material already today but hydrogen production currently generates significant carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, clean hydrogen can be used to replace other energy and thus promote reaching climate goals. Together with Hycamite, Gasum wants to be at the front line of bringing new solutions to the market.

"Gasum aims to provide customers with cleaner energy. Capturing solid carbon from natural gas and biogas makes it possible to further reduce climate impacts from use of gas. This is why we are really excited about this opportunity to explore the suitability of the solutions based on Hycamiteís technology for the needs of Gasumís existing and potential customers. Gasum wants to support its customers on their path to carbon neutrality and this makes it important to provide solutions to the needs of different customers," says Mikko Syrjšnen, Director, Business Development, Gasum.

Hydrogen and carbon from gas without GHG emissions
Using Hycamiteís technology, Gasumís gas can be converted, both centrally and decentralized at Gasumís customersí sites, into clean hydrogen and carbon without greenhouse gas emissions.

"Weíre really pleased to start cooperation with Gasum because we now have a chance to broadly study the suitability of our technology for various purposes in Finland and the other Nordic countries. Our goal is to offer companies the chance to start using sustainably produced hydrogen now," says Hycamiteís CEO Laura Rahikka.

Finnish company Hycamite TCD Technologies produces hydrogen and pure solid carbon by splitting the methane molecules in natural gas and biogas without emissions. Proprietary thermocatalytic technology enables sustainable decentralized production at the customerís site. Used catalysts can be recycled in an environmentally friendly way. The simultaneous production of hydrogen and carbon lowers production costs. The technology is based on long-term applied chemistry research at the University of Oulu. www.hycamite.com
