The cargo handled at Major Ports during 2014-15 was 581.34 Million Tonnes (MT) as against 555.49 Million Tonnes handled during 2013-14, registering a growth of 4.65%. In the Current Year from April to October, 2015, total traffic handled was 347.89 Million Tonnes as against 335.57 Million Tonnes handled in corresponding period of the last year, registering a growth of 3.67%. The details of Operating Income and Operating Surplus, Port-wise, for the last year and current year upto September are as follows:
The total capacity of both Major and Non-Major Ports was 1530.23 Million Tonnes. As per the 12th Plan document, the capacity of Major Ports is targeted to increase from 702.80 MT to 1229.24 MT by the end of the 12th five year Plan and that of Non Major Ports from 544.65 MT to 1457.42 MT. The Government has taken several measures to increase the capacity of Major Ports as also to bring them at par with international standards. These are as under: (i) Construction of new berths (ii) Upgradation of existing berths (iii) Mechanization of berths (iv) Installation of state of art equipments (v) Mechanization of cargo handling systems (vi) Dredging of navigation channel and berths to accommodate large vessels. Government has set target to generate 135 Mega Watt (MW) non-conventional energy in Major Ports in next five years starting from 2015-16. Port-wise targets for Solar Energy are as follows:
