The world's largest gas-powered ferry construction onset feast-day at Western

24 November 2010, Western Shipyard subsidiary Western Baltija Shipbuilding celebrated the onset of the world's largest gas-powered ferry construction. Western Shipyard and Fiskerstrand Verft AS joint venture Fiskerstrand BLRT AS signed the contract with the Norwegian company Fjord1 for the construction of a gas-powered ferry at the end of June this year. This is one of the largest shipbuilding projects in Lithuania, with the total value of - 163.6 million LTL. Western Shipyard and Fiskerstrand Verft AS hold 50 percent each of Fiskerstrand BLRT AS shares, a company established in 2007. Fiskerstrand BLRT AS is engaged in shipbuilding and the development of the renewable energy projects. "We are very pleased that we managed to win a major contract for the construction of a new ferry when shipbuilding industry is not experiencing the best times. This proves that we are able to compete with other European shipyards," - said CEO Fiskerstrand BLRT AS Rolf Fiskerstrand.

Ferry, able to accommodate 600 passengers and 242 cars, will be built for the Norwegian company Fjord1, which is one of the largest transport group in the country operating 63 car ferries, and more than 500 buses and vans. The 129,9 m length and 19,2 m breadth ferry concept and the design has been developed by the Norwegian ship design company Multi Maritime AS with a considerable experience. One of the world's leading classification societies, Det Norske Veritas will provide the gas-consuming ferry with 1A1 class. The ferry will be equipped with four ship's azimuth thrusters, gas-powered electrical system, consisting of three 2,430 kW gas engines and 3,000 kW diesel engine. The speed of inland waterways ferry - 20 knots.

The Scandinavian ferry construction work at Western Baltic Shipyard will go on until December 2011. The ferry intended for sailing within the Norwegian Bokna fjords between Arsvågen and Mortavika of Rogaland County is called as a very environment –friendly, as LNG (liquefied gas) engine is based on "green" concept that is strongly emphasized not only in Norway but also throughout the European Union. The ferry will also act as a standby ship on a route between Sandvikvåg and Halhjem of Hordaland County.
