Naming Ceremony for Newbuilding LNG Carrier Marvel Swallow for Mitsui & Co. Held

Tokyo - October 25, 2024

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) today announced that on October 25, it held a naming ceremony for a newbuilding LNG carrier, which will serve Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (President: Kenichi Hori; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), at the Geoje Shipyard of Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd. in South Korea.

Mitsui & Co. Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer Toru Matsui and many others were on hand for the ceremony, where the vessel was christened the Marvel Swallow(Note 1).

After delivery on October 28, the vessel will undergo gassing-up / cool-down operation in Japan and then proceed to its first loading port in the U.S. The Marvel Swallow will sail under a time charter contract with Mitsui & Co.

MOL and Mitsui & Co. signed a charter contract for the Marvel Swallow, the fourth in a series of vessels, in 2022. Contracts were signed for the three previous newbuilding vessels in 2014 and 2015.

The vessel is equipped with the latest MAN Energy Solutions engines, which offer improved fuel efficiency and are more environmentally friendly than those installed on current LNG carriers.

(Note 1) "Marvel" is commonly used by Mitsui & Co. for its fleet engaged in the LNG trading business, and Swallow is derived from the name of the MOL-operated Northwest Swallow, engaged in the North West Shelf LNG project in which Mitsui & Co. is involved, and symbolizes the long-term relationship between Mitsui & Co. and MOL.
