Novoship’s tanker rescued a man at the Black Sea
14.09.2010
On 12 September 2010, at 5.00 p.m. MT the crude oil tanker NS Creation (Novoship, SCF Group) rescued a man 27 nautical miles far from the Russian Black Sea coast.
The NS Creation was passing to the port of Novorossiysk for shipment when the officer on watch Kirill Malinovskiy noticed a half-sank rubber pair-oar boat on the sea surface. A man in the boat was desperately waving an oar trying to attract the crew’s attention. It clarified later that the NS Creation was not the first vessel for which the boat was within the field of vision, but dark clothes made the figure imperceptible among the waves.
The crew of the tanker acted in accordance to the drill scenario “Man overboard”. When the man from the Russian city of Bryansk had come to his senses after a great stress he had to overcome, he told his saviours about his unfortunate voyage. According to his words, he was spending his vacation with his wife and children at Lermontovo (about 100 km from Novorossiysk). Early in the morning, on the 9th September, he went fishing and did not notice that he started drifting to the open sea. A wind arose and rowing towards the shore was completely ineffective. More than that, one of the oars broke. The next day some vessels passed nearby without seeing the man in distress. On the third day weariness and thirst drove him to despair, and only the fourth day brought good fortune.
As per the Master Andrey Sadchenko’s report, the rescued man came onboard in satisfactory condition. Though he was extremely dehydrated, and the body did not obey well, the mind stayed clear. To render proper aid the NS Creation’s crew contacted the medical consulting center. Following the received instructions the rescued man was given a little drinking water at a time, and then broth and hot tea.
In the evening the tanker reached the port of Novorossiysk. The port authorities got on board, interrogated the rescued man and registered his evidence. After that he safely went ashore.
