Novoship’s Tanker Attacked by Pirates off Lagos

On the 22 November 2010, at 01.49 MT, at the road of Lagos (Nigeria) 30 nautical miles off the coast a Novoship-owned product tanker NS Spirit was attacked by pirates.

According to the Master’s report, around ten armed people bordered the NS Spirit obviously aiming to rob the vessel. The intruders opened fire with automatic weapons. The crew managed to hide themselves in a shelter. Since the pirates left the vessel no attempts to attack the tanker again have been registered.

All of the 22 Russian seafarers on board are alive. One of the crewmembers is reported to have received a gunshot wound. The evacuation is being organised, a speed-boat is on the way to the vessel.

The NS Spirit is currently within the port limit. The vessel and her cargo sustained no damage.
