ONE APUS Container Incident

Statement 7 - 11th December 2020

Chidori Ship Holding LLC as owners and NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd as managers of the container vessel ONE Apus (IMO# 9806079) can confirm that operations for the safe removal of the displaced containers on deck have started after permission to proceed was granted by the Japanese Coast Guard.

The ship remains safely berthed in the Port of Kobe after losing 1,816 containers overboard when it encountered severe weather on Monday, November 30, 2020. The careful removal of the dislodged units under a schedule formulated by stowage planners is expected to take over a month with safety the number one priority. Once unloaded, each will be assessed, and when the discharge of cargo is complete, there will be a full assessment of damage to the vessel and subsequent repairs.

A thorough investigation is being conducted into this incident in conjunction with the Flag State and the relevant maritime authorities. As the discharge operation and investigation are expected to take some time, further updates will only be provided on an as-needed basis.


Statement 6 - 8th December 2020

Chidori Ship Holding LLC as owners and NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd as managers of the container vessel ONE Apus (IMO# 9806079) can confirm that the ship is now safely berthed in the Port of Kobe after losing 1,816 containers overboard when it encountered severe weather on Monday, November 30, 2020.

A full safety inspection of the vessel and its remaining cargo will now take place with the assistance of local emergency services to ensure that there is no threat to people or the environment posed by the dislodged and damaged containers that remain on deck.

Once the vessel and cargo are declared safe, surveyors from the various stakeholders will make their initial assessments whilst stowage planners and stevedores formulate and implement a plan to ensure the safe removal of the remaining units. Then, a thorough evaluation will be made on the exact number and type of containers that have been lost or damaged and damage to the vessel.

We are liaising with the JRCC in Honolulu, who are continuing to broadcast safety messages to marine traffic about the lost containers and sightings. A full investigation is being conducted into this incident in conjunction with the Flag State and the relevant maritime authorities.

Statement 5- 7th December 2020

Chidori Ship Holding LLC as owners and NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd as managers of the container vessel ONE Apus (IMO# 9806079) can now confirm the contents of the estimated 64 Dangerous Goods containers, which were among 1,816 units lost overboard after the vessel encountered severe weather on Monday, November 30, 2020,

54 of the DG containers carry fireworks whilst a further eight hold batteries, and two contain liquid ethanol. A notification was sent to the JRCC in Honolulu and Guam with maritime navigational warnings subsequently broadcast. We are continuing to liaise with the JRCC in Honolulu, who has advised that there have not been sightings of any containers as yet.

The vessel is cautiously proceeding to the port of Kobe, Japan with an ETB of 1200LT on December 8, subject to all operations proceeding as planned. The priority remains on getting the ship and crew safely to port. Once berthed, it’s expected to take some time to offload the dislodged containers that remain on board. Then, a thorough assessment will be made on the exact number and type of containers that have been lost or damaged.

Once the ONE Apus is in port and deemed safe, a full investigation will be conducted into this incident in conjunction with the Flag State and the relevant maritime authorities.


FP2: MV ONE APUS 006E/W (Update)

December 4, 2020

Further to our Customer Advisory dated December4, 2020, we can confirm that ONE Apusis proceeding to the port of Kobe, Japan with an ETA of December 8, after encountering severe weather on Monday, November 30, 2020, and losing sections of its load.

The revised estimate of lost units now stands at 1,816. The priority remains on getting the vessel and crew safely to port.

Once berthed, it isexpected to take some time to offload the dislodged containers that remain on board.

Then a thorough assessment will be made on the exact number and type of containers that have been lost or damaged.

Once the ONE Apus is in port and deemed safe, a full investigation will be conducted into this incident in conjunction with the Flag State and the relevant maritime authorities.

Statement 2 - 2nd December 2020

Chidori Ship Holding LLC as owners and NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd as managers of the container vessel ONE Apus (IMO# 9806079) report that the ship is now proceeding in a westerly direction towards Japan with plans to seek a suitable port to right unstable containers, assess any damages and determine the exact numbers of containers lost after encountering severe weather on the night of Monday, November 30 2020.

The vessel was on passage from Yantian, China to Long Beach, USA approximately 1600NM North West of Hawaii, when it encountered a violent storm cell producing gale-force winds and large swells which caused the ONE Apus to roll heavily resulting in the dislodging of the lost containers.

A notification was sent to the JRCC in Honolulu and Guam with maritime navigational warnings subsequently broadcast.

Early investigations onboard the ONE Apus have determined that the impacted container bays remain unsafe for close-quarter inspections; however, it is estimated that the number of lost or damaged units could exceed 1,900, of which some 40 are believed to be DG containers.

Our focus remains on getting the ship to a safe port to ensure the ongoing safety of the crew, the vessel and the cargo on board.

A full investigation will be conducted into this incident in conjunction with the Flag State and the relevant maritime authorities.


Statement 1 - 1st December 2020

NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd as managers of the container vessel ONE Apus (IMO# 9806079) regret to report that a significant number of shipping containers were lost overboard during severe weather on the night of Monday 30th November 2020 at 2315LT approximately 1600NM North West of Hawaii, USA.

The vessel was en-route from Yantian, China to Long Beach, USA when it encountered a storm cell producing gale-force winds and large swells which caused the ONE Apus to roll heavily resulting in the containers to dislodge and fall into the ocean. The Master diverted the vessel to ensure the ongoing safety of the crew and ship until conditions eased.

A notification was sent to the USCG in Honolulu and NYK Shipmanagement is coordinating with stakeholders to find a port of refuge for the vessel to assess any damages and determine the numbers of containers lost.

A full investigation will be conducted into this incident in conjunction with the Flag State and the relevant maritime authorities.




MV ONE APUS suffered collapsed containers due to severe weather conditions

Ocean Network Express (ONE) is currently assisting owners and managers of container ship ONE APUS (IMO: 9806079; Japan flag) with investigations into the loss of containers overboard during severe inclement weather on 30 November 2020 as the vessel was transiting the Pacific Ocean.

ONE APUS was en route from Yantian, China to Long Beach, USA when it encountered gale-force winds and large swells around 1,600 nautical miles northwest of Hawaii, USA.

The severe weather conditions caused the vessel to roll heavily resulting in a yet-to-be-determined number of containers to dislodge and fall into the ocean.

MV ONE APUS suffered collapsed containers due to severe weather conditions

This is to inform you that MV ONE APUS serving in our Far East Pacific 2 (FP2) Service suffered collapsed containers due to severe weather conditions while the vessel was enroute to her next port of call, Long Beach.

Investigations are ongoing and further information will be provided once available.

The vessel schedule is expected to be delayed and her schedule recovery plan is currently underway which will be advisedsubsequently.
