Theo Notteboom, co-director of the PortEconomics initiative, presented the ITMMA Report
on dock labour and port-related employment in the European port system at the European Sea Port Organisation (ESPO) 2010 conference held
in Helsinki, May 28-29, 2010.
The report, commissioned by ESPO and authored by Theo, is unique in its kind by providing
a framework that relates performance of port labour systems to market requirements. It also illustrates the diversity of the port labour systems in Europe and
their relation to legal and policy conditions. The report fnally highlights some general trends such as a move towards open and autonomous pool systems, a push from the employers' side towards continuous working
and the establishment of a more permanent workforce.
Theo was joined at the ESPO conference discussions by the co-director of the PortEconomics initiative, Thanos Pallis whose presentation had the theme Port and Port-related labour: Challenges
ahead and analysed the Nindings of the report and the key labour challenges that European ports and port authorities face.
Theo and Thanos had the opportunity to discuss these Nindings with top executives from the ports of Gothenburg and Marseilles and leaders
of the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF), the International Dockers’ Council (IDC) and the Federation of European Private Port Operators (FEPORT) Read and download the Report &
