Gas tanker Grand Aniva carry the 500th delivery
of LNG for Sakhalin-2 project

The 500th delivery of liquefied natural gas via the LNG terminal was loaded in the port of Prigorodnoye (Sakhalin Island). After the loading Grand Aniva headed for Japan.

Grand Aniva is one of two Sovcomflot LNG tankers, chartered by the operator of the project – Sakhalin Energy Investment Company (SEIC). Sovcomflot is SEIC’s main partner in seaborne energy transportation for Sakhalin-1 project for Sakhalin-2 project. Besides LNG tankers, the project is being served by three oil shuttle tankers of ice class 1C and by a supply ice-breaking vessel for production platforms – Pacific Endurance (ice class Ice10), owned by SCF.

It was Grand Aniva which, in February 2009, was visited by Dmitry Medvedev, president of Russia, who took part in the official ceremony of launching Russia’s first LNG in the Sakhalin Island. The gas tankers built for Sakhalin-2 project has a special feature – an enhanced ice-class hull consistent with the requirements of ice class 1C, which allows the ships to operate in crashed ice up to 40 cm thick.

LNG Plant – a unique enterprise for Russia – was launched in the South of the Sakhalin Island in 2009. Last year it reached its project capacity - 9.6 million. With starting its operations, Russia became a full member of elite club of countries-LNG exporters. Specialised sea port of Prigorodnoye receives about 100 Aframax oil tankers and 160 LNG tankers annually.

Piltun-Astohskoye and Lunskoye fields, with recoverable reserves estimated as 150 million tonnes of oil and 500 billion cubic metres of gas, are being developed as a part of “Sakhalin-2” project. The project is operated by Sakhalin Energy. Gazprom (50 per cent + 1 share), Royal Dutch Shell (27.5 per cent - 1 share), Mitsui Corporation (12.5 per cent) and Mitsubishi (10 per cent) are the shareholders of the company.
