New Sovcomflot tanker is named
after Georgy Maslov

On 10 September 2012 in Busan (South Korea) a naming ceremony of a new SCF tanker Georgy Maslov took place. The vessel was named after a distinguished figure in the modern history of the Russian commercial shipping, a former head of all-Union association "Sovfracht” - Georgy Maslov.

It is the second vessel built at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shipyard as part of the agreement for the construction of a series of tankers destined for crude oil and petroleum products transportation, signed in October 2010 between Sovcomflot and Zvezda-DSME - a joint venture of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (Russian Federation) and the Korean shipyard “Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering”. In May 2012, the first tanker of the series - Nikolay Zuyev - started her operations as part of the SCF fleet.

The vessel complies with all existing international and Russian standards of navigation safety and environmental protection. After being taken into operation the tanker will begin her first voyage from the West Coast of India to the continent, loaded with a cargo of diesel fuel. The charterer of the vessel is "British Petroleum". The project monitoring, the approval of design drafts, the construction supervision, the management and further technical exploitation of the tanker Georgy Maslov is made by Novoship – a company that is part of the SCF group.

The tanker Nikolay Zuev has a number of competitive technical advantages. In particular, the index of energy efficiency of the new vessel is much lower than the basic level established for vessels of this class. The system allows a continuous use of low-sulphur fuel(with a sulphur level of 0.1%). In conjunction with other measures, it makes the ship among the most environmentally friendly vessels. Her draught of 14,9 metres and her increased beam of 46 metres provides the maximum possible cargo capacity when passing through the Baltic straits, and her dimensions meet the requirements for seaborne transportation of hydrocarbons to the terminals of Primorsk and Ust-Luga.

The ship’s cargo system allows simultaneous transportation and pumping of three different types of fuels in 12 cargo tanks, including crude oil and dark-oil products. A special steering design is used to improve the propulsive efficiency and maneuverability of the vessel; the submerged part of the hull is coated with anti-fouling, low-friction paint; the ship has monitoring equipment to provide optimal speed parameters, draught and trim of the vessel, depending on the cargo loaded and navigational conditions; the company standards regarding crew living and working conditions have been fully implemented, with individual cabins of higher comfort levels being provided.

Georgy Maslov (30/11/1925 - 17/08/1997) - Honored Worker of the USSR Marine shipping, Honored Transport Worker of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, former chairman of all-Unionassociation "Sovfracht". In the 60-70s he stood behind the foundation of a system of foreign companies that represented and protected the interests of domestic commercial fleet on the world market. Maslov was one of the developers of the idea to found Sovcomflot. The backbone of the managerial personnel, assembled by Georgy Maslov, became the basis for a new generation of specialists in commercial shipping.
