ILA-USMX Joint Statement Regarding Master Contract

North Bergen / Lyndhurst, NJ - October 3, 2024

The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance, Ltd. (USMX) have reached a tentative agreement on wages and have agreed to extend the Master Contract until January 15, 2025, to return to the bargaining table to negotiate all other outstanding issues. Effective immediately, all current job actions will cease, and all work covered by the Master Contract will resume.

Update on status of USMX-ILA negotiations

Lyndhurst, NJ - October 2, 2024

"USMX's goal continues to be focused on ratifying a new Master Contract that addresses all the critical issues the parties need to bargain. Reaching an agreement will require negotiating - and our full focus is on how to return to the table to further discuss these vital components, many of which are intertwined. We cannot agree to preconditions to return to bargaining - but we remain committed to bargaining in good faith to address the ILA's demands and USMX's concerns."

Update on status of USMX - ILA negotiations

Lyndhurst, NJ - October 1, 2024

"Our industry directly supports hundreds of thousands of jobs in the United States and is a significant economic driver for the U.S. economy and families across the country. USMX is proud of the wages and benefits we offer to our 25,000 ILA employees, and strongly supports a collective bargaining process that allows us to fully bargain wages, benefits, technology, and ensures the safety of our workers, day-in and day-out. We have demonstrated a commitment to doing our part to end the completely avoidable ILA strike. Our current offer of a nearly 50% wage increase exceeds every other recent union settlement, while addressing inflation, and recognizing the ILA's hard work to keep the global economy running. We look forward to hearing from the Union about how we can return to the table and actually bargain, which is the only way to reach a resolution."

USMX and ILA exchange counter offers around wages

Lyndhurst, NJ - September 30, 2024

"In the last 24 hours, the USMX and ILA have traded counter offers related to wages. The USMX increased our offer and has also requested an extension of the current Master Contract, now that both sides have moved off their previous positions. We are hopeful that this could allow us to fully resume collective bargaining around the other outstanding issues - in an effort to reach an agreement. Our offer would increase wages by nearly 50 percent, triple employer contributions to employee retirement plans, strengthen our health care options, and retain the current language around automation and semi-automation."

USMX files unfair labor practice charge with NLRB

Lyndhurst, NJ - September 26, 2024

"USMX has been clear that we value the work of the ILA and have great respect for its members. We have a shared history of working together and are committed to bargaining. Due to the ILA's repeated refusal to come to the table and bargain on a new Master Contract, USMX filed an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and requested immediate injunctive relief - requiring the Union to resume bargaining - so that we can negotiate a deal."

Update on status of USMX-ILA negotiations

Lyndhurst, NJ - September 23, 2024

"Despite additional attempts by USMX to engage with the ILA and resume bargaining, we have been unable to schedule a meeting to continue negotiations on a new Master Contract. We remain prepared to bargain at any time, but both sides must come to the table if we are going to reach a deal, and there is no indication that the ILA is interested in negotiating at this time. USMX has received outreach from the Department of Labor, the Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service (FMCS), and other federal agencies and we will keep them up-to-date on the status of negotiations. We would be open to working with the FMCS, as we have done successfully in the past, but that is only possible if both sides agree to mediation. Our goal remains the same - we want to bargain and avoid a strike, but time is running out if the ILA is unwilling to return to the table."
