French security causes major passenger delays at UK's Dover port

Jul 24, 2016

Drivers trying to cross into France from England's Dover port faced major delays on Saturday (July 23) as French authorities ramp up security measures after the truck attack in Nice.

According to local media, passengers could face up to seven hours of waiting time before they get on to a ferry to make their journey across.

Long queues of cars, buses and lorries were seen at the port crossing.

Many of the passengers are holiday makers, some with young children frustrated with the delays.

Hundreds of passengers were stranded overnight on Friday (July 22) as French border police have been asked to increase security and check all vehicles entering France.

France has been under a state of emergency since November after attacks across Paris left at least 130 people dead.

The French government extended the state of emergency till the end of July in the wake of the attack in Nice on July 18, when a driver ran a lorry into people, killing at least 84.
