Dramatic ship rescue off Chilean coast
17 Aug 2012
The Ocean Breeze cargo ship was stranded off the beach of Llolleo town in southern Chile after its anchor broke due to strong currents.
Navy helicopters braved giant waves to airlift the 24 crew members on board to safety. The men from the Philippines and Myanmar were reported to be shaken but uninjured.
Specialized teams are trying to figure out the best way to move the ship, which is carrying wheat and soy, out of its dangerous position.
The storm also affected the Valparaíso and Vina del Mar regions, causing disruptions to traffic and the closure of the main highways.
