MOL Capesize Bulker's 1st Biofuel Voyage Underway for Anglo American

Driving Decarbonization through Digital Certification of GHG Reduction Value

Tokyo - September 19, 2025

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto, Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo) today announced the successful completion of biodiesel-blended marine fuel (biofuel) bunkering in Singapore on September 14 on the MOL-owned capsize bulk carrier, Lambert Maru, which serves global mining company, Anglo American (Head Office: London, UK). Lambert Maru's voyage is now underway, powered by biofuel-a viable alternative to fossil fuels.

This voyage represents an advanced case of utilizing the MOL Group's carbon inset program framework, "BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE (Note 1)", which was launched to achieve net-zero emissions in maritime transportation. The greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction value delivered through this voyage will be allocated to Anglo American using digital certification. It can be incorporated into integrated reports or other disclosures as part of its Scope 3 reduction activities.

The biofuel used for this refueling is a B30 blend certified under the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC-EU) (Note 2), consisting of 30% biomass (organic resources derived from living organisms, such as waste cooking oil). It is expected to reduce CO2 emissions during navigation by approximately 30% compared to conventional fossil fuels (Note 3).

Biofuel represents an effective alternative to fossil fuels, offering lower carbon emissions. Its compatibility with existing marine diesel engines and bunkering facilities ensures a smooth transition without requiring modifications. Based on the environmental strategy outlined in BLUE ACTION 2035, the MOL Group will continue to proactively adopt clean fuels with the aim of decarbonizing marine transport.

Note 2: International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC-EU)
This certification verifies that sustainable fuels made from biomass and waste comply with EU legal requirements for sustainability and GHG emission reductions, as stipulated by the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED II).

Note 3: Although biofuels emit carbon dioxide (CO2) during combustion, the plants used as raw materials absorb CO2 and reproduce biomass, as they grow and regenerate biomass, so the net CO2 emissions from direct combustion are considered effectively zero. For this reason, biofuels are gaining attention as fossil fuel alternatives capable of achieving carbon neutrality.
